Emancipation is inspired by a true story of “Peter,” best known from a series of photos taken by medical examiners in the Union Army in 1863. “The Scourged Back,” one of the images, captures the brutality and inhumanity that slavery entails. The images were published in Harper’s Weekly on July 4, 1863, and are said to have helped galvanize the abolitionist movement.

The film is directed by William N. Collage and stars Mustafa Shakir (Ben Foster), Charmaine Bingwa (Charmaine Bingwa), Steven Ogg, Charmaine Ogg, Charmaine Bigwa, Imani Pulum, Gilbert Owuor, Gilbert Owuor, Aaron Clifton Morris, Aaron Clifton Morris, and Michael Luwoye.
