Will Smith wants to ensure that anyone with Internet access can stream his passion project, Emancipation, for free on Apple TV .
The Antoine Fuqua-directed film, chronicling the harrowing freedom journey of a Black man who escaped slavery in Louisiana, premiered on the streaming platform on Friday (Dec. 9).
Smith posted an Instagram video on Thursday saying, “I’ve been reading many of the comments and I see that a lot people say they don’t own Apple TV .”
The 54-year-old actor reached out to Apple and secured a streaming deal for new and returning subscribers to watch the film for free.
Emancipation is inspired by a true story of “Peter,” best known from a series of photos taken by medical examiners in the Union Army in 1863. “The Scourged Back,” one of the images, captures the brutality and inhumanity that slavery entails. It shows Peter’s, whose real name is Gordon, being welted back covered with keloids after the severe beatings he received from his slave masters.
The images were published in Harper’s Weekly on July 4, 1863, and are said to have helped galvanize the abolitionist movement.
The film is directed by William N. Collage and stars Mustafa Shakir (Ben Foster), Charmaine Bingwa (Charmaine Bingwa), Steven Ogg, Charmaine Ogg, Charmaine Bigwa, Imani Pulum, Gilbert Owuor, Gilbert Owuor, Aaron Clifton Morris, Aaron Clifton Morris, and Michael Luwoye.
Smith, Joey McFarland, Todd Black and Jon Mone are the producers. Executive producers include Chris Brigham and Fuqua, James Lassiter (Heather Washington), Cliff Roberts, Glen Basner, Scott Greenberg, and James Lassiter (Fuqua).
Emancipation made its theatrical debut on Dec. 2. For more information on streaming the movie, please read on.
