Karol G is becoming really good at catching us by surprise, and also, surprising us. Witness her new single, “Provenza.” It was released with little anticipation on the eve of the 2022 Latin AMAs (where Karol G was the big winner, but was not in attendance). The track is also surprising in a way Karol is becoming more inclined to be.
Following a string anthemic, rhythmic tracks (from “Tusa” through “Makinon” to “Mamiii”, her collab, “Provenza”, she feels like an impressionistic paint: Sweet and gentle, yet with a strong undercurrent.
Singing to a calypso-esque beat and a lilting melody, Karol longs for a reunion with her past love — “Baby, what’s the up?” Haven’t heard from you in a while. I was with someone, but now I’m free. Ready to relive old time, haven’t seen in a long while.” — her vocals almost floating in harmony over the soft, but fast-paced bass.
Despite the chant at the end of the track “Provenza” feels more like a dance than an urban song. The video features only women of all sizes and stripes, uninhibitedly lounging and swimming in a beach town. Karol, a face almost devoid of makeup, embraces the freedom of it all.
