Georgia man arrested in dog-fighting ring bust, more than 100 dogs rescued

A Georgia man was taken into custody this week in connection to a dog-fighting operation.
More than 100 dogs were rescued in the bust in Paulding County. Vincent Lemark Burrell, 55, faces charges of animal cruelty and dog fighting.
“Detectives with the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office arrest a local man for breeding, training, and facilitating over one hundred pitbulls in conjunction with dog fighting at his Paulding County home,” the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a press release.
Detectives raided Burrell’s home on Tuesday through the execution of multiple search warrants and arrested the suspect without incident. After an investigation into the dog fighting operation, the raid was conducted. A total of 106 dogs, most of which were pit bulls, were discovered on the property “in various degrees of existence,” the sheriff’s office said.

“Some of the dogs were emaciated, while others were strong and extremely aggressive toward other dogs,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “The sad thing is that most of these animals just wanted the love and attention from the Detectives and Deputies that were there to help them. All the dogs were rescued and taken to various rescue facilities for rehabilitation.
Detectives found the animals tied to trees and metal stobs in the ground. The dogs were not properly hydrated or fed.
” These animals were tied to different things using large and very heavy logging chains and thick necks,” the sheriff’s department stated. “Many of these dogs were left out in the elements for days without shelter.

The dogs were also not regularly checked or vaccinated by a veterinarian.
“Some dogs were kept in basements where urine and feces were so strong that authorities had to use protective equipment to enter the home. The conditions in which dogs were housed were not suitable for humans or dogs, both on the exterior and inside. “

Burrell was booked into the Paulding County Jail. He is currently being held in jail without bond.
Investigators said he faces more than 100 additional counts that have yet to be filed. In cases like this, we must conduct a long and thorough investigation,” Sheriff Gary Gulledge stated in a statement. “This is not something we can do in a few hours. Cases like these require us to collaborate with many local, state and federal agencies. I am proud of all the teamwork displayed in this case, and I am grateful that these dogs are now safe. Dog fighting is a dark and sinister culture that should be outlawed in this world. “
